Project Context

This project was part of my HCDE 308: Visual Communication Design class at the University of Washington. The task was to design a case study for a music festival, incorporating elements of branding, marketing, festival navigation, and app design into the overall experience. My festival named RIOT’s goal was to appeal to a wide audience, with a focus on the variety of rock expressions as singular and immersive experience.

I designed the ticket to balance readability with the rock festival theme. The vertical tear-off section keeps key information accessible, even irtn a wallet. The center highlights entry details, while the right section covers post-entry information. The red-black and blue-white color scheme, paired with a classic ticket shape, reflects the bold and iconic style of rock music, enhancing both functionality and the festival experience.

I used the Metal Mania typeface for the event headlines, important information like the date, place, and the word mark. This typeface has strong, sharp strokes and is all caps. Its striking and bold design puts it at the top of the hierarchy, making important information stand out.

With Nunito, I was able to keep the design cohesive and understandable with all the other parts. It provides a composition that is visually appealing and readable. An organized flow is produced in the hierarchy by the major events of each day coming first, then the additional all-day events.

The task chosen is for Aditi (the persona) to purchase a ticket for the Riot Rock Music Festival.

Given that Aditi isn't very active on social media but relies on friends and university announcements for updates, my user flow prioritizestt simplicity and clarity to ensure easy navigation for someone who might not be used to purchasing tickets online.

Wireframes

This class was my first time designing an interface without predefined layouts or guidelines. My initial wireframes were very basic, and I refined them significantly for the final design.

User testing revealed that users appreciated the clean and simple layout with essential information, but they found the "add to cart" and "buy now" options confusing.

They also noticed the absence of a "delete ticket" option in the tickets section.

To address these issues, I removed the cart feature and enabled direct ticket purchases. This change simplifies the buying process, reduces confusion, and streamlines the user experience.

This project taught me how to designing for large-scale events. I learned how critical it is to balance aesthetic appeal with functional usability, especially in a high-energy environment like a music festival. The process of understanding my target audience through persona development and customer journey mapping was particularly insightful, helping me design an experience that felt personalized and engaging.

Through the HCDE 308 class, I gained insights from my peers that pushed my designs to be more user-focused and contextually aware. This class, and the festival design project specifically, helped me refine my skills in user-centered design and apply them in a real-world context.
